Good to know about Pyhä-Häkki National Park
Pyhä-Häkki National Park, located in Saarijärvi, is the smallest and oldest national park in Central Finland. Pyhä-Häkki National Park was established in 1956 as part of the second wave of parks to protect valuable old-growth forests and the fauna that depend on them.
The primeval forests of Pyhä-Häkki National Park are among the finest in southern Finland. Half of the park is forest and half is seamp, which guarantees a diverse habitat for species. Among the old trees are ancient trees. The shield-barked pines are at least 200 years old. The oldest trees in the park date back to the 16th century.
Thanks to the pine cones found in the old-growth forests of Pyhä-Häkki National Park, the forests of the park have been raised to the highest category of old-growth forests; a very valuable, unique forest area. Owls, woodpeckers and tits thrive particularly well in the forests of Pyhä-Häkki National Park.
