On the border between Central Finland and Central Ostrobothnia, amidst vast swampy wilderness and primeval areas, you will find the magnificent Salamajärvi National Park. The park was established in 1982 to protect the wilderness nature of the Suomenselkä watershed area.

The trees in the Koirajoe primeval forest of Salamajärvi National Park are large and old, because Metsähallitus has protected the primeval area since 1912. Salamajärvi National Park is large in size and rich in species. In the park, you can experience the largest swamps in southern Finland alongside primeval areas. The emblem of Salamajärvi National Park is the Finnish forest reindeer. A lucky hiker in the park may see a rare Finnish forest reindeer, smaller than the familiar elk.
